The 2025 Australian Open is here as the first Grand Slam of the new year with the top ATP and WTA players heading for Melbourne, so here is everything you need to know.

Melbourne has set the stage to host the 113th edition of the Australian Open in 2025 as ATP world No1 Jannik Sinner and WTA world No1 Aryna Sabalenka push to retain their titles. But they are only two of the 104 ranked players who automatically got in the 128-person draws.

Sinner won the Italian’s first Grand Slam title by taking the men’s singles trophy for the 2024 Australian Open. He is a long way from rivaling the most successful male tennis player in the tournament’s history as Novak Djokovic is bidding to add to his 10 Australian Open titles yet.

Serena Williams also boasts the record for the most Australian Open women’s singles titles in the open era with seven. Court recorded seven of her 11 all-time tiles during the amateur era, before lifting four more. Roy Emerson won six amateur Australian Open men’s singles titles.

Predictions for the 2025 Australian Open

Our team of expert writers at The Tennis Gazette have voiced their predictions for the 2025 Australian Open ahead of play starting in Melbourne, including offering their views on who will win the men’s and women’s singles titles over the first Grand Slam of the calendar year.

Matthew Johns: “The Australian Open is always an interesting tournament as it feels like a completely clean slate and players tend to bring their best level for the first Grand Slam of the year.

“It still feels like a fever dream that Novak Djokovic is being coached by Andy Murray. That partnership has the potential to be so special that I am backing Djokovic to win a historic 25th Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

“In the women’s draw, Coco Gauff has completely won me over with her performances at the United Cup, looking like an even better version of the player that she already was.”

George Patten: “Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka may be the heavy favorites to take home the opening Slam of the season, but they could be in for a shock Down Under.

“Novak Djokovic will no doubt learn from his defeat 12 months ago, and could well be set for an 11th title on Rod Laver Arena.

“A name that has barely left the spotlight, Nick Kyrgios, might just fall at the first hurdle in Australia, as British star Jacob Fearnley may prove too much for the controversial star.

“On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka will face a tough test against Coco Gauff, who has been in imperious form over the past few months. Similarly to Djokovic, Gauff lost to the eventual champion in the last four in 2024, but this time could go all the way.”

Peter Lynch: “A long list of star names look in great shape heading into the Australian Open, despite not exactly having very long of a rest in the off-season.

“There have, unfortunately, been a few high-profile withdrawals but both the men’s and women’s events are certain to provide plenty of drama and controversy, particularly with Nick Kyrgios involved.

“It could also be an Australian Open farewell for record 10-time winner Novak Djokovic, while it will be intriguing to see how Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek manage given the attention they have attracted in recent months.”

Lee Clarke: “The first Grand Slam of the year is always an exciting one and there are lots of little sub plots going into this one.

“Will Carlos Alcaraz claim the Career Grand Slam at just 21? Can Coco Gauff get back in a Grand Slam winner’s circle? How will Djokovic perform with Andy Murray in his corner and will Nick Kyrgios ever leave Jannik Sinner alone!? Let the tennis begin!

“I’m predicting another brilliant Australian Open, although it’s one I’m anticipating might be slightly truer to form than some of the majors last year with Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka both set to go well once again.”

Liam Llewellyn: “It is difficult to decide a winner for the 2025 Australian Open titles. Several names are in the running for the title on the men’s side, but I think world number one Jannik Sinner retains the title.

“On the women’s side, given her scintillating form and newfound belief and confidence in her game, Coco Gauff will claim her first Australian Open title and will also beat defending champion Aryna Sabalenka along the way.”
